You’ve
probably heard that “Prep is
everything” and it’s
true. Properly preparing walls to
receive either paint or wallpaper
is essential. Unless the walls are
already pristine, this will probably
involve some degree of plastering,
skim coating, sanding and sealing
with a primer. If you plan to continue
living in your residence while the
work is going on, sealing off areas
to prevent dust and fumes from spreading
to unwanted areas can be demanding
on the occupant. Closets may be sealed
off so clothes and other items that
will be needed during the work period
should be removed beforehand.
Dust
containment is especially important
in city apartments because often there
is no cross-ventilation. Opening a
door can create a suction effect,
pulling
dust into areas where the contractor
isn’t working. Staying on top
of dust by using zippered plastic is
key.
Using a reverse flow fan in a window
is also helpful.
Abe
Lincoln once said if he had eight
hours to cut down a
tree,
he’d spend six hours sharpening
the axe.
